About Applied Optical Sciences
Applied Optical Sciences, Inc. is a privately held corporation located in Tucson, Arizona. It was founded in April 2010 to perform advanced research and development of photonic devices and their applications.
An important aspect of the company is the ability to quantitatively analyze the physical properties of materials. To develop this materials testing aspect, the company has acquired several unique analytical instruments that allow for detailed materials and surface analysis. Applied Optical Sciences (AOS) has decided to offer some of these capabilities to outside companies and individuals at reduced rates when compared to most analytical service companies. The reason for this is simple: It allows AOS to partially offset overall operating costs by utilizing the equipment during idle time and off-hours. The benefit to outside customers is access to expensive and powerful analytical and materials testing capabilities at very attractive prices.
Very useful for surface quality measurements over relatively large areas and can handle a variety of materials including metals, glass, and plastics.
A variable-pressure SEM which allows for a relatively low vacuum near the sample. Therefore, non-conductive samples can be imaged without adding conductive coatings, such as gold or carbon.
The noise floor on this system is measured to be ~ 0.25 angstrom and is therefore capable of atomic resolution. Useful for high resolution surface texture and materials information.
